New
Classroom for Kindergarten
In April of 2014, the beloved CUPS
Board Chairman, John Moore, went to be with the
Lord. At that time, many of you contributed to a
memorial fund in his honor. We are excited to
report that the new classroom for the kindergarten
in Colonia Moctezuma, Valle Hermoso, built with
this fund is now in use. Just as the last wall was
painted, the students moved into their new
classroom in early June. CUPS first worked in this
colonia in the mid-1990s. We maintain contact with
the school on a yearly basis with school supplies
and books from CUPS friends as well as quilts for
the little ones made by LaGrange volunteers of
First Presbyterian Church and First United
Methodist Church.
Now the school has a new classroom
to replace the old structure that was in such bad
condition. John would have been truly pleased to
see this project come to fruition. John loved his
family, his Lord and his community, a love that
extended all the way to Mexico. Books that
he and his wife Patty sent to CUPS for
distribution, for example, have already found a
place in this
kindergarten. |

Valle Hermoso city
social services also provided support for the
project - the floor - as did a nearby country
school who donated a black board, actually green
(!) for the school. Community members took on the
job of painting the building.
Louise has been
invited to be the madrina or sponsor for the 20
students who will graduate in mid-July from the
five kindergarten schools all associated with the
city sponsored CAIC (Centro de Atencion Integral
Comunitario) program. There are three urban
schools and two rural one. All are part of
the CUPS school support program.
Health
and School Supplies Needed
Hope Presbyterian Church (Austin)
held a spring 2015 campaign for health equipment
and supplies that are so badly needed in
Mexico. They also asked and received
donations from the Lions Thrift Shop, Elgin, and
the Society of St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Stores
in Taylor and Austin. Rudy Munguia and Rick
Covington then traveled to McAllen and offloaded a
pickup load of health equipment.
CUPS works with rural health
centers in the Valle Hermoso and Matamoros area,
with the Valle Hermoso city social services
department, organizations such as the Rio Bravo La
Sautena Lions Club and various churches throughout
the area. These friends widen
the area of service to help those with health
equipment and supply needs. In rural
communities, women serve as promotoras de salud
(health promoters). They are vital to health
care efforts as they live in their community and
know those with chronic health
problems. |

Health and school supplies are
always needed but especially at this time of year.
Specific needs can be found by clicking on the
Donation Schedule. CUPS supporters provided these
much needed supplies this spring.
- Three
rural schools were enriched by computers,
benefiting over 60 students.
- March
was Special Education month. It was celebrated
by schools in Valle Hermoso with lively dances
by the students and recognition of the support
given to these schools, including that of CUPS
and our volunteers and the donations of CUPS'
friends.
- Donated Bibles in Spanish come 24
to the box. In the rural community of La
Zacatecana, 22 were given away as ladies of the
community also found clothing for their families
from over 7 large bags. What was a "loaf and
fishes story" is how a young mother with twins
came late and still found much appreciated
clothing for her girls and received one of the
last Bibles.
- Forty
teachers benefited from enrichment materials,
thanks to donations CUPS received, and the 5
teachers who came to the CUPS warehouse to
select material for delivery to their teacher
colleagues.
- Much
good can happen if you "just show up" embraced
by His Love.
As we head into the summer,
the following special items are critically
needed.
- Bibles
in Spanish. Santa
Biblia. Nuevo Version Internacional. $5.00
for one; $80 for box of 24. CUPS has very
few left. We just gave a box of 24 for a
church El Tabernacula del Dios Viviente, La
Gloria that opened a mission in the nearby rural
community of Zaragosa about six months ago.
- Quad
canes (the one with 4 feet
which is what they call them in
Mexico). Lots of elderly
live in rural communities and with a study cane
the possibility of a fall is greatly
reduced. We have two requests for these
canes as I write and we always have more.
- Wheelchairs. We
received two wheelchairs recently. They are
already placed. One went to a lady with a
broken hip in the small town of Empalme and the
other for a diabetic in the rural community of
La Gloria which is near Matamoros. CUPS
gets a request at least once a week for a
wheelchair.
- Blunt nose scissors for the children. We are
always short of these scissors. Kindergarten
teachers get a special packet with scissors for
their kids, if we have any. We would like to
have each primary school packet have scissors
and you can help make this happen.
If
you can help with any of these special needs,
please let us know by clicking here to find the
appropriate contact.
Your continued support through donations is
so appreciated. | |
